By default, the .NET runtime visits all the sublevels of a policy level when the mem bership condition is true. For example, if the assembly comes from the MyComputer zone and has the Microsoft strong name, the runtime first searches the My_Computer_Zone group and then continues into the Microsoft_Strong_Name group. (See Figure 33-2.) You can avoid this recursive search by telling the policy manager that policy levels below a given policy level should be ignored when searching a mem bership condition that matches the assembly in question. This option is named flag level final and corresponds to the bottommost check box in the General tab of a code group s Properties window. (See Figure 33-7.) None of the scenarios illustrated so far consider the case when an assembly belongs to two or more code groups at the same level in the hierarchy. For illustration purposes, let s say that assemblies in the Microsoft_Strong_Name group can read files and that assemblies in the VB2TheMax_Site group can access the registry. What happens to an assembly signed by Microsoft and downloaded from the www.vb2themax.com Web site By default, the .NET runtime grants the assembly the union of the permissions granted by all the individual code groups the assembly belongs to, and in most cases this is what you want. (In this example, a strong name Microsoft assembly downloaded from the VB2TheMax site would be granted permission to both read files and access the registry.) However, you can override this default behavior and force the .NET runtime to associate the assembly with only one code group. This option is termed flag exclusive. You enforce it by selecting the topmost check box in the General tab of the property window of that code group. In this specific example, you should select this check box in the property window for the Microsoft_Strong_Name code group if strong name Microsoft assemblies should be granted permission to read files only, even if they are downloaded from the VB2TheMax site (or, more in general, if they satisfy the membership condition of other code groups).

Now that you have a better idea of code groups, permissions, and permission sets, it is easy to understand how the CAS mechanism works. The .NET runtime uses the assembly evidence to assign the assembly to a code group, which in turn lets the runtime discover the set of permissions associated with the assembly itself. This process occurs both when you launch a stand-alone executable

(for example, a Windows Forms application) and when a running application loads an assembly, either implicitly by accessing one of the types defined in the assembly or explicitly via reflection (for example, by means of the Assembly.LoadFrom method). If the permission set associated with the assembly doesn t include at least the Execute permission set, the .NET runtime refuses to load the assembly. Otherwise, the CAS subsystem quietly waits until the code in the assembly attempts to access one of the sys tem resources that require permission. What happens at this point, however, is a bit more complicated than you might expect. When the current assembly attempts to create an object or invoke a method that is pro tected by CAS for example, one of the objects that interact with the registry or the file system the .NET runtime triggers a stack walk and visits all the assemblies in the call stack. (See Figure 33-8.) The .NET runtime grants the permission to complete the oper ation only if all the assemblies in the stack have the necessary permission. As soon as the .NET runtime finds one caller that doesn t have the permission being demanded, the stack walk is interrupted and the operation fails with a security exception.
